Award-winning Sydney author Gail Jones returns to the “New Releases” section of our shop with her latest novel, The Death Of Noah Glass. At first glance, the book fits snuggly into the international art heist-thriller genre. But in Jones’ gifted hands, The Death of Noah Glass delves meaningfully into issues of relationships, family ties, the impact of culture and art, what is real, and what is an illusion. When art academic Noah Glass is found dead in the swimming pool of his Sydney apartment building, his adult children Martin and Evie come together to deal with their grief and wind up Noah’s affairs. This seemingly resilient family foundation is shaken, however, when a police officer informs them Noah is suspected of stealing an expensive Sicilian artwork from a private collection. While Melbourne-based Evie moves into her father’s home to try and make sense of what’ s happened, Martin travels to Palermo to retrace his father’s steps and try and uncover the truth. Jones’ talent for sophisticated storytelling is on full display as she prods her characters to question their creativity, their contribution, who they are, what they mean to one another. Highly recommended, and book clubs in particular will find it a most worthy work to study.
