After two years, Cardinal returns to our shelves
This week the County Court lifted suppression orders surrounding the trial of Cardinal George Pell. Shortly after the Court’s declaration, Melbourne University Publishing - publisher of journalist Louise Milligan’s controversial and award-winning book Cardinal – announced the book would once again be available for sale.
We had huge success with Cardinal when it arrived in 2017; indeed, one of our best-attended author nights that year was our “In Conversation” with Louise Milligan. Then in June that year, Cardinal: The Rise and Fall of George Pell was withdrawn from sale in Victorian bookshops when Victoria Police charged George Pell for historical sexual assault offences.
Last December Pell was convicted of five charges of sexual crimes against but the charges could not be reported until 26 February, as Pell was still to face court under a second set of charges relating to separate alleged historical offences. The suppression order was lifted after the Department of Public Prosecutions dropped the second set of charges.
Whichever side you are on in the George Pell case, or whatever your views regarding his guilt or innocence, we urge you to read Cardinal. It is informative, provocative, revealing and, at times, deeply moving.
Cardinal won the 2017 Walkley Book Award, and the 2018 Melbourne Prize for Literature Civic Choice Award. CLICK HERE if you would like to purchase a copy.
